Boulder, Wyoming

Trip Report 8/23/24

This is one of those places I have heard about my whole childhood. Learning from family, climbers, runners and campers I set out with my friend Wyatt on day two of what would ultimately be three days of mountain marathons. An August gathering of friends in Boulder Wyoming set me up for this window of exploration. I took full advantage of the days.

This was peak summer literally and figuratively. Writing this almost two years later, that peak still holds true. This is a must see place for outdoor enthusiasts.

The morning started with a 5:30am beating of the Trailblazer into the Big Sandy opening where our run would start. Opting for clockwise direction we followed the Fremont, Hailey Pass, and Shadow Lake trails to arrive at Texas Lake and pass. Tucked high in glacial bowls this was already an exceptionally scenic day with smooth trail and cloud cover to keep the temperature down.

The clouds began to burn off as we crested Texas pass and dropped into Lonesome Lake. This is the place with 360 degree views of smooth granite towers holding court above this alpine lake. Pingora Peak is especially prominent amongst giants.

The loop continues over Jackass pass under the watch of War Bonnet Peak. This is the last climb of the loop before descending onto the Big Sandy Trail. In the distance looms the Temple peaks which would in fact lure me into another big day in the Winds. The familiar Big Sandy Trail took us back to the car.

This place gets the wheels turning in your head. There is a lifetime of climbing and peak bagging to be done in the Winds. The short but sweet summer season puts your priorities into perspective.

Beta: Big Sandy Trailhead. No permits necessary. August proves to be snow and bug free, which are common challenges in early season. Plenty of water along the entire route.
