Trip Report 10/22/25
Sedona, Arizona
Our scenic Sedona week is underway with an afternoon dash up Boynton Canyon to the Subway Cave. This was a pretty straightforward run with relatively easy navigating, though it is worth noting that many people completely miss the turn-off to the cave, which sits approximately 2 miles from the main Boynton Canyon trailhead.
To be honest, I was expecting more of an enclosed cave, as wide-angle photos tend to distort the space. From directly below, the formation isn't nearly as pronounced as you would expect. Nonetheless, the views did not disappoint.
Boynton Canyon is incredibly lush and colorful, with the late afternoon sun giving the desert canyon walls a brilliant, deep glow. The classic view looking outward from inside the Subway slot is outstanding.

This spot is also home to ancient Sinagua cliff dwellings and granaries. These less-talked-about historical features are over 600 years old. Tucked high into the dry alcoves, these structures were built by the Sinagua people to store harvested crops and seeds safely away from the elements and scavenging animals.

After checking out the cave, I added on some additional miles by running all the way to the very end of the canyon, where the trail terminates after a steep climb up the back of the box canyon. My specific route and map started out from the Enchantment Resort which is not a public trailhead. Runners and hikers should use the standard Boynton Canyon Trailhead located just a mile down the road.
